About This Project
Strength in the Existing
At The METHOD PT in Boston’s South End, Balance Architects transformed a vacant commercial space into a welcoming destination for physical therapy, performance, and recovery. The design celebrates the building’s existing character, pairing warm exposed brick with dark industrial ductwork, expressive structural details, and carefully considered lighting.
A central challenge was reconciling the character of the original exposed ceiling with modern fire-safety requirements. A new fire-rated ceiling assembly was introduced, while recreated wood beams preserve the warmth and rhythm of the original structure. Existing steel tension rods remain visible, adding another layer of architectural interest.
The result is a distinctive environment that balances the energy of a training facility with the comfort of a place dedicated to healing. By bringing new purpose to an underutilized South End storefront, the project reflects Balance Architects’ commitment to revitalizing urban spaces through thoughtful, adaptive design.
